How to Play
1. Set up the balls
- Place the 15 object balls in a triangle (rack).
- Put the 8-ball in the center of the rack.
- Place the cue ball at the starting position.
2. Break
- The first player performs the break shot.
- If a ball is pocketed, that player usually continues their turn (depending on the game’s specific rules).
3. Choose your group
After the first legally pocketed ball:
- Solids: Balls 1–7
- Stripes: Balls 9–15
Each player is assigned one group.
4. Take turns
On your turn:
- Strike the cue ball.
- Pocket one of your assigned balls.
- If successful, continue shooting.
- If you miss or commit a foul, your opponent takes over.
5. Common fouls
Examples include:
- Hitting your opponent’s ball first.
- Pocketing the cue ball (scratch).
- Knocking balls off the table.
- Failing to hit any object ball.
Many versions award the opponent ball in hand, allowing them to place the cue ball anywhere.
6. Win the game
- Pocket all of your assigned balls first.
- Then legally pocket the 8-ball.
- If you pocket the 8-ball too early or scratch while pocketing it, you usually lose.
Tips for Beginners
- Aim carefully instead of shooting hard.
- Try to leave the cue ball in a good position for your next shot.
- Clear easy balls first.
- Save difficult shots until you have a better angle.
